The Museo Atlántico, Europe's First Underwater Museum

The Museo Atlántico in Playa Blanca, Spain is the first underwater sculpture museum in Europe. It has been open to the public since March 2016. Divers can dive here amongst the impressive sculptures of artist, Jason deCaires Taylor, famous for his underwater art. The museum is 12 meters deep down pristine waters near the south coast of Lanzarote Island in Atlantic Ocean.

“Museo Atlántico” is dedicated to “the dialogue between past and present and the divisions within society”, and has been conceived as a place to promote education about preserving and protecting the marine and natural environment, as an integral part of the system of human values.

This underwater museum comprises several large-scale installations as well as more than 300 individual sculptures, made of non-toxic, pH neutral cement which, over time, will help the marine biomass flourish and facilitate the reproduction of species on the island.

The sculptures are depicted in various positions and activities. The figures of a couple taking a selfie and some other, refer to the use of new technology in our modern society. The Rubicon is a group of 35 human figures all facing the same direction, towards the point of no return. The models used for these sculptures are Lanzarote residents. Also there are several hybrid sculptures showing the merging of nature and humanity, existing together in harmony.
