West Azarbaijan is one of the most beautiful provinces of Iran. It is located in North West of the country bordering with Turkey. Urmia or Orumiyeh is the capital of West Azarbaijan. Cold northern winds affect the province during winter and cause heavy snow. According to existing meteorological data, local temperatures vary within the province. Permanent settlements were established in the province as early as the 6th millennium BC as excavation at sites such as Tappeh Hasanlu & Gooy Tappeh established. The UNESCO world heritage site at the Sasanian compound of Takht-e-Soleyman illustrate the strategic importance and tumultuous history of the province through the millennia. Overall, the province enjoys a wealth of historical attractions, with 169 sites registered by the Cultural Heritage Organization of Iran.
West Azerbaijan province has many old and various handicrafts which are produced both in rural and urban areas of the province, the mentioned handicrafts include Carpet weaving, Embroidery, Wood carving, Kilim weaving, Jajim weaving & etc. Some of the tourist areas of the province are Orumiyeh Lake, Shams Tabrizi Tomb, Takht-e Soleyman, Qareh Kelissa, Sahoolan Cave, St. Thaddeus Monastery, Tappeh Hasanlu, Chapel of Dzordzor, Orumiyeh Historical Bazaar, Segonbad & etc.
