In January 2019, the InterContinental Hotels Group celebrated the official opening of InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, the world’s first underground hotel in Shanghai, China.
The winner of an international design competition in 2006, Martin Jochman and his studio JADE + QA have dedicated over a decade to turn the abandoned former quarry into an art form.

The 337-guestroom Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel contains only two levels above ground, with 16 more levels plunging into the quarry below. The groundscaper hotel features such amenities as Spa, InterContinental Club lounge, The Quarry Bar, Six Underwater Suites (which have their own saltwater aquariums), every room has a Balcony and a Cozy Theater Box (from where you can watch the nightly water show), Seafood Underwater Restaurant (surrounded by a saltwater aquarium), and Chinese Restaurant.

Grass roof and thermal properties of the quarry rock mass and lake create a unique microclimate that provides summer cooling and winter heating. The whole site has been specially designed using “Fengshui”, and the shape of the hotel from above replicates the interlocked “Yin and Yang” symbol.

The construction of the hotel was completed in October 2018 and opened to the public in November 2018.
