Hualien Wellness & Residential Complex, Taiwan

The Hualien Wellness & Residential Complex, designed by BIG, is located in Hualien City, Taiwan. This complex seeks to preserve and enhance the beauty of the surrounding nature.
The volumes are shifted to ensure that daylight and views reach deep into the residences. Sloping green roofs provide shade, remove heat, harvest rainwater, produce clean air and create a stress-relieving environment for residents.

The apartments, with custom furniture designed by KiBiSi, inherit attributes from the angled silhouettes to add an almost traditional vernacular feeling of attics and porches in the middle of the dense modern development.

This 1000 m2 complex places a particular focus on exercise, healthy living and community. A public path wraps around the entire complex and is studded with interesting activities to encourage more walking and exercise, such as an observation point, performance stage, shops and restaurants. A medical facility ensures that residents have ready access to healthcare services.

Media rooms, lounges, pools, and meditation spaces provide low-stress situations for meeting people. The open kitchen, common gardens and library also become places where people can share and learn from each other.
