The Helix; Amazon's New Headquarter

Amazon has unveiled proposed development plans for the second phase of its Virginia headquarters. Designed by architects NBBJ, the same firm behind Amazon’s ‘Spheres’ on their Seattle campus, the project includes three 22-story office buildings that will run on 100% renewable energy and ‘The Helix’ at the center of the project. The proposed 2.8 million square feet design seeks to re-envision the future of work to better support the wellbeing of employees and a strong connection with the local community. The project is expected to begin in 2022, with the goal of Helix and the three office buildings to be completed by 2025.

Biophilia – the concept that describes humanity’s innate connection to nature – is the inspiration behind the Helix. A true double helix in shape and structure, it will feature two walkable paths of landscaped terrain that will spiral up the outside of the building. The Helix will offer a variety of alternative work environments for Amazon employees amidst lush gardens and flourishing trees native to the region. These working environments prioritize areas for collaboration, natural light, and a constant interaction with nature. Similar to the Spheres in Seattle, the Helix will be open to the public on weekends and some of the ground-level space dedicated for farmers markets.

A variety of open spaces totaling more than 2.5 acres will be accessible for public use including an amphitheater facing a central green can host outdoor concerts, farmers’ markets, and movies in the park, while a forest grove offers shaded areas for relaxation on a hot day. Elsewhere, retail pavilions and restaurants will be conveniently located throughout the site. The plans also include room for a childcare center, a dog run, and a food truck area with outdoor seating.

The publicly accessible spaces throughout the site will prioritize pedestrians and cyclists. Visitors and neighbors won’t see service vehicles crossing the new site as all deliveries and docking activity will happen underground, freeing up even more space for the community.
