Creek Harbor Observation Tower, Dubai
Santiago Calatrava was announced the winner of the competition to design an observation tower for Dubai Creek Harbor development: soon to be "as great as the Burj Khalifa and the Eiffel Tower". The design of the tower of Dubai Creek Harbor is inspired by the natural forms of the lily and evokes the shape of a minaret, a distinctive architectural feature in Islamic culture.
The elongated, oval-shaped bud that takes shape at the top of the tower will be outfitted with 10 observation decks, including a 360-degree Pinnacle Room and two VIP garden decks. The tower will also have a world-class boutique hotel for visitors.
Its slender stem, reminiscent of the delicate ribbing of the lily's leaves, will serve as the structure's spine while anchoring the building to its ground level Central Plaza that offers world-class retail, a museum, educational facilities and an indoor auditorium. A number of green corridors are envisaged for pedestrian access and effortless connectivity with Dubai Creek Harbor.
The design has a clear reference to classic art from the past and the culture of the place while serving as a great technological achievement. Every aspect of The Tower is designed and being developed to the highest international standards of safety – from the choice of materials to the technology being used.
It is already under construction and is expected to be completed in 2020.
