Howeler + Yoon's Public Space Arts & Installations

Höweler + Yoon is a design-driven architecture practice and creative studio. Architects Eric Hõweler and J. Meejin Yoon are the founders of the studio. The team is a dedicated group of architects, designers, and researchers. Their projects range from cultural and institutional buildings, mixed-use residential and commercial buildings, to public spaces, interactive environments, and research projects.

Höweler + Yoon projects ask how design fits within contemporary culture, how it can affect behavioral and social norms, and how it can produce a sense of place or create environmental awareness. Each project involves a research agenda into larger cultural trends, material properties, fabrication processes, or environmental conditions.

Höweler + Yoon Studio has received numerous awards including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award (2019), AIA Religious Art and Architecture Award (2019), Winner of AIA Small Project Award (2018) for “Shadow Play”, WAN Award (2016), etc.

Famous Projects:

  • DDP Kiosk, South Korea, 2016

Built adjacent to the Dongdaemun Design Park (DDP) in Seoul, South Korea, the Korean Kiosk acts as an information platform and spatial interface for visitors.

  • Collier Memorial, USA, 2015

Situated on MIT’s campus in honor of Officer Sean Collier, the Collier Memorial offers the opportunity to remember Officer Sean Collier and honor his life, service, and represent shared values: openness in the face of threat, unity through diversity, and strength through community.

  • Shadow Play, USA, 2015

The geometry of the canopy maximizes the production of shade and shadow while allowing for breezes and air movement. The power generated by the photovoltaic panels is stored in batteries, allowing the canopy to be illuminated from within in the evening time.

  • Crisscross Signal Spire, USA, 2014

The structure of the spire is a braided array of tubes woven together acting as a vertical timeline of Boston’s transformation from three distinct towns into a city of 21 neighborhoods.

  • Swing Time, USA, 2014 to present

Swing Time is an interactive playscape composed of 20 illuminated ring-shaped swings. When the swings are not in use, they emit a soft, white light that illuminates the area and when they are in motion, the micro-controller switches the light from white to purple, creating a more colorful glowing effect.

  • Light Drift, USA, 2010

The orbs on land use sensors to detect the presence of a person and relay a radio signal to the corresponding orbs in the water, allowing visitors to transform the lighting behavior and color of the orbs in the river. Multiple viewers create intersections of linear patterns, encouraging viewers to “play” with each other.

  • LoRez HiFi, USA, 2006

Hi-Fi consists of a grid of stainless steel poles that respond to touch by emitting musical notes, creating a new kind of public musical instrument. Each environment traces the movements of passersby, creating a dynamic display of light and sound.

  • White Noise White Light, Greece, 2004 Olympics

"White Noise/White Light" is an interactive sound and light field that responds to the movement of people as they walk through it. As pedestrians enter into the fiber optic field their presence and movement are traced by each stalk unit, transmitting white light from LEDs and white noise from speakers below.
