BREAKFAST Art and Engineering Studio
Founded in 2009, BREAKFAST is a new media art collective focused on creating forward-looking software-and-hardware-driven artworks that connect viewers to far-away places through interactive experiences and tell powerful stories about our rapidly-changing world.
The studio's practice employs a unique blend of computer science, mechanical engineering, and playful, emotionally-striking aesthetics to invite audiences to reflect on the relationship between the physical, the digital, the global, and the intimate—as well as the evolving relationships between human bodies and technological innovation in the Information Age.
In 2018, BREAKFAST began experimenting with Brixels, a mechanical medium of their own design. These brick-like-objects, which can take on various forms and be made from a myriad of materials, can precisely rotate, making up an array of kinetic pixels.
BREAKFAST, based in New York City, creates one-of-a-kind pieces that are custom for each client to be installed in lobbies, airports, and other large spaces. They also have held so many installations and exhibitions in USA, Germany, Russia, Spain, etc.
Famous Projects:
Pulse, 2019
Pulse is a two-story-tall installation built from 390 Brixels - infinitely rotating, digitally controlled, mirrored and matte-black "bricks" that move together to create mesmerizing visualizations.
Pool, 2019
The individual Brixels collectively mimic the moments of a surface of reflective water. The sculpture translates the human motions above and around it into ripples across the surface.
Awaken, 2019
Awaken is made up of 168 Brixels each with a mirrored and black side. The piece expresses a reaction to a person’s movements through rotating Brixels with accentuated light.
Climate Change, 2019
The Climate Change Series explores creating a connection between you and areas in the world that are currently highly-impacted by climate change. When one steps up to a piece, the climate measurement impacts your image, representing that you are a part of this story and that the impacts affect us all.
Brixel Mirror, 2018
Brixel Mirror was the first piece created by BREAKFAST using their new medium, Brixels. The piece is an exploration of creating organic movement from the least of organic shapes and materials.
Flip-Discs 45, 2018
BREAKFAST developed a way to increase the speed of Flip-Discs, a mechanical display technology, and began creating large-scale installations using this modified technology. Flip-Discs 45 explores human movement and reactions to it.
Echo, 2018
"Echo" is a multi-sensory experience that visualizes real-time data occurring on social media through ripples that move across the surface. As the amount of social posts increases or decreases, it will impact the clarity of your portrait.
