World's Highest Waterfall, Venezuela
Angel Falls, with a height of 979 meters and a plunge of 807 meters, is the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall. The waterfall was not known to the outside world until the mid-20th century. It was named (as the Angel Falls) after Jimmie Angel, a US aviator, who was the first person to fly over the falls in 1933. Angel Falls (known as Kerepakupai-merú) is one of the world's great natural wonders and Venezuela's top tourist attractions. It is 152 meters wide at its base and in total is 15 times higher than America's Niagara Falls.
Angel Falls is situated in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela. The periphery of this area is filled with grasslands, whereas deeper into the Gran Sabana one finds dense jungle. This part of the world is remarkable for its numerous flat-topped mountains with vertical walls. The waterfall drops over the edge of the Auyán-tepui Mountain (Devils Mountain) in the Canaima National Park. Canaima National Park, with its breath-taking variety of tropical wildlife an awe-inspiring vistas, is the gateway to Angel Falls.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site is only accessible by air. Passengers fly over dense swathes of deep jungle, much of which remains untouched by man, as well as ancient mountains and many snaking rivers. The climate at Angel Falls is tropical, with frequent rainstorms.
