Ho Chi Minh City Central Park, Vietnam

LAVA with partner ASPECT Studios has won the international competition to design the 16 hectare Central Park in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with construction due to start in 2020. Designed to have an informal layout, LAVA and Aspect Studios' masterplan is centered around a series of elevated, undulating ramps and walkways. These replicate the positions of entwining railway tracks that occupied the site in the 19th century. The site has always been about transportation. It had the first train station in Southeast Asia. The design references both this history and future mobility, with Vietnam’s first metro station soon to be opened underneath.

The design is layered with a series of spaces, places and experiences. Interspersed between the ramps, LAVA and Aspect Studios has incorporated a series of stepped, sunken garden that offer a mix of performance and play spaces in a bid to make the park a day and night destination. Among the spaces will be a sculpture garden, an outdoor art gallery, water features, sport zones, playgrounds and music pavilions. Known locally as ‘September 23 Park’ it also hosts the important annual spring festival.

The masterplan will be complete with three different types of artificial tree that will provide shelter, water and energy for the city. ‘Water purification’ trees collect rainwater to be recycled and used for watering, drinking fountains and fire hydrants. ‘Ventilation trees’ reduce heat and create fresh air. ‘Solar trees’ feature solar panels angled to optimise radiation and store power, and info screens, charging docks, and WIFI routers.

LAVA Central Park has won numerous awards including the 2019 Sydney and NY Design Awards, "Future Project of the Year" in the Ashui Awards Vietnam in 2019 and the 2020 GOV Design Awards.
